2008: a look at the past
Remember when communicating with friends
first took on a whole new meaning.
We took our mouse, and clicked away,
it was the direction our future was
leaning.
Remember when high speed internet was all
the rage,
No one could have ever imagined anything
faster
in our age.
Gone were the days of getting in trouble
for
writing notes in school.
We stayed in contact electronically,
silent or vibrate,
we were so cool.
Online bulletin boards like MySpace and
Facebook
took up much of our time.
While cell phones and text messaging
gobbled up our last dime.
Vans, Sketchers, and Converse,
just a few brand-names to mention.
And brand new clothes with stains and
gaping holes,
We
looked like we belonged in detention.
Who would have thought all of our
favorites
would ever go out of style.
I guess if you wait long enough,
everything does,
after a while.
But some things never change, if you pay
attention.
Like family, close friends, church, and
Jesus…
and the need for a good retirement or
pension.
2008 was quite a year, and it went by Oh
so fast.
And then another 50 years,
not a single minute would forever last.
But as time marched on, it became so
obvious,
where my attention should turn.
To those I loved, to those who loved me,
to those who needed my concern.
Now, gone are the days of mp3 players,
video games, on-line diaries,
and informing all of my “friends”.
Here to stay are the days
of looking forward to joy that never
ends.
Oh yes, I still communicate with those
I’m closest to.
But computers and cell-phones are so
outdated,
they’ve all been replaced by what’s new.
Who would have thought ancient history
would be from 2008.
It seems a hundred years ago, 1958.
So live in the present, not in the
future,
not in years gone by.
For in the scheme of eternity,
we’re only a speck or a sigh.
Jesus came and left this earth 2000 years
ago,
Our sin was to blame, but He still loves
me,
this I surely know.
So, graduating seniors,
Chase,
Josh, Ryan, Tara, Chris, & Anthony…
Launch out into life, give it all you’ve
got.
Your time has come to make your mark,
here you go, ready or not.
But this one thing is the ending of the
poem,
and a very important part.
Your church family here in Fort Gibson,
will always love you,
and you’ll be right here in our heart.
